Home, Redefined
Practical advice, honest perspective, and design inspiration for anyone starting over and building a space that finally feels like them.
Designing Two Homes: Continuity for Kids of Divorce
Two houses, two floor plans, one kid who has to make sense of both. Real continuity isn't about matching furniture, it's about palette, layout, storage, and material choices that help a child feel instantly oriented, no matter which door they walk through.
Kids moving between houses are recalibrating constantly: new layout, different storage, unfamiliar textures and colors, a room that may or may not have been finished yet. Some kids will say this feels unsettling. Many won't, either because they don't have the words for it or have simply adapted. That doesn't mean the space isn't impacting them.
Here's how I actually approach that design work.
Why I Design for Those Moving on From Divorce
There are things you understand intellectually about divorce. And then there are things you only understand from living it.
I have lived it twice — once as a seven-year-old when my parents divorced, and again as an adult dismantling a ten-year marriage and starting over from scratch.
This is the story behind Petite Design Studio — and why I believe, more than almost anything, that the home you come home to after divorce matters more than most people realize.
Why Your Home Matters After Divorce More Than You Think
Most people set up their first home after divorce in survival mode. They grab what they can, buy a few things in a hurry, and tell themselves they'll sort it out properly later.
Months pass. The space still feels temporary. And that feeling starts to bleed into everything else.
Here's what I've come to believe, both from personal experience and from working with clients going through this: the home you create after divorce matters far more than most people give it credit for. Not because of aesthetics — but because of what it quietly does to your state of mind every single day.
A Single Dad’s Story: How Home Design Changed Everything After Divorce
When Dave came to Petite Design Studio, he wasn't looking for a transformation. He was a busy single dad in Littleton who needed his home to finally work — for him and for his kids.
What happened was more than that.
Below, Dave shares his experience in his own words. It's a good reminder that when you get a home right after divorce, it doesn't just look better. It changes how everyone in it feels.
